How to identify it

Flat, oval, reddish-brown insects about 4–5 mm (the size of an apple seed), swelling and darkening after a blood meal. Nymphs are smaller and translucent.

Where it hides

Mattress seams, box springs, headboards, baseboards, outlet plates and furniture — anywhere within a few feet of where people sleep.

Signs you have them
  • Rows or clusters of itchy bites on exposed skin
  • Tiny rust-colored blood spots on sheets
  • Dark fecal specks along mattress seams
  • A sweet, musty odor in heavy infestations
