The word alone makes people want to burn the bedroom down. Take a breath first, because two things are true: bites are not proof, and the most common panic reactions genuinely make the problem harder and more expensive to solve. Confirming it properly takes about fifteen minutes with a flashlight.
Why bites prove nothing
People react to bed bug bites very differently — some develop obvious welts, others show nothing at all, and reactions can be delayed by days. Plenty of things bite you at night in Florida, and plenty of skin conditions look like bites. A bite pattern is a reason to go looking. It is not a diagnosis.
The four signs that actually confirm it

- Live insects. Adults are about the size and colour of an apple seed — flat, oval, reddish-brown, and rounder after feeding. They are visible to the naked eye if you look in the right place.
- Dark spotting. Small, dark, ink-like dots along the mattress seam, the box spring edge or the headboard, which can bleed slightly into fabric like a marker would.
- Shed skins. Translucent, insect-shaped casings, often collected in the seams and folds. These indicate a population that has been there long enough to moult.
- Eggs. Tiny, pale and sticky, tucked into crevices. Harder to spot, and a sign of an established population rather than a hitchhiker.
Where to look, in order
Start with the mattress seams and the tag, then the box spring — especially the underside, where the fabric is stapled to the frame. Then the bed frame joints and screw holes, the headboard, and finally the seam where carpet meets baseboard nearest the bed. Bed bugs stay close to where a person sleeps, so the search radius is smaller than most people expect. Take the sheets off and use a bright flashlight at a low angle.
Do not fogger the room, and do not immediately move to another bedroom or the couch. A fogger scatters them into wall voids and neighbouring rooms; moving where you sleep spreads the infestation to a second room, because they follow the host.
What to do if you confirm it
- Do not throw the mattress out yet. It is expensive, it does not solve the problem on its own, and moving an infested mattress through the house is how they end up in the hallway.
- Keep sleeping in the same bed until it is treated. That sounds wrong. It keeps them concentrated where the treatment will be.
- Bag and wash affected bedding on hot, then dry on high. Heat is what kills them, and the dryer does more of the work than the wash.
- Write down when and where you first noticed it, and any recent travel or secondhand furniture. It helps identify how it started and whether it has spread.
Why this one is genuinely not a DIY job
Bed bugs hide in crevices a credit card would struggle to enter, they can go a long time between meals, and their eggs resist most products. Effective treatment is a systematic process over more than one visit with follow-up timed to the hatch cycle. Retail products almost always produce a partial kill that scatters the survivors, which is why so many bed bug jobs are harder the second time someone calls. Rhino inspects across the Treasure and Space Coast at no charge — and if it turns out not to be bed bugs, you will hear that plainly.
