How to identify it
Tiny (1–3 mm), dark reddish-brown, flat side-to-side, with powerful hind legs for jumping. Hard to crush.
Where it hides
Pet bedding, carpet, upholstery, and shaded outdoor harborage where pets and wildlife rest.
Signs you have them
- Pets scratching, biting and licking constantly
- Tiny dark 'flea dirt' specks in pet fur and bedding
- Small itchy bites around your ankles
- Fleas jumping off carpet or furniture
Why it matters
Fleas cause allergic dermatitis in pets, can transmit tapeworm, and bite people. Because eggs and larvae hide off-host, killing adult fleas alone never solves it.
