Fruit Fly
Tiny red-eyed flies that appear over ripening fruit, wine and fermenting drains.

About 3–4 mm, tan-brown with distinctive bright red eyes and a rounded abdomen. Move in slow, hovering, looping flight patterns around fruit bowls and wine glasses.
Fermenting organic matter: overripe fruit, vegetable scraps, wine dregs, moist garbage disposals and the organic film inside floor drains and sink drains.
- Small flies hovering over fruit, wine bottles, recycling bins or trash
- Flies appearing from nowhere when fruit ripens or sits out
- Larvae (tiny white worms) in very ripe or damaged fruit
- Persistent flies despite removing fruit — signaling a drain breeding source
Fruit flies don't bite or spread serious disease, but they contaminate food surfaces and indicate overripe or decaying organic matter somewhere in the home. Drain breeding populations can be hard to eliminate without treatment.
