Similar to native subterranean termites but swarmers are slightly larger (12–15 mm), yellowish-brown with hairy wings. Workers are indistinguishable in the field; colony size is the key difference — Formosan colonies can reach several million termites versus tens of thousands for native species.
Underground colonies that send foragers above-ground via mud tubes; they also build aerial carton nests inside walls, trees and utility poles. Common in coastal and central Florida.

Formosan termites can consume wood at a rate that causes serious structural damage in as little as three months. Their massive colonies, aerial nesting ability and aggressive foraging make them far more destructive than native species.
