No-see-ums — biting midges — are the reason a beautiful Florida evening on the lanai can end abruptly. They are tiny enough to be genuinely hard to see, they bite hardest around dawn and dusk, and the welt often shows up well after the bite, which is why people blame mosquitos. Living on the coast makes it worse, not better: they breed in damp, mucky ground, and salt marsh, mangrove edge and low wet ground are exactly what we have.
Why your screens are not stopping them
Standard window and lanai screen is sized for mosquitos. No-see-ums are substantially smaller and pass straight through it. If your lanai is screened and you are still being bitten out there, this is almost always why — not a hole in the screen. The material that stops them is a finer mesh, sold specifically for midges, and it is the single most reliable fix for a screened porch. It does reduce airflow, which is the honest trade-off.
The pattern to work with, not against

- They are worst at dawn and dusk, and much less active in the middle of a hot, bright day.
- They are weak fliers. A ceiling fan or box fan on a lanai genuinely disrupts them, and that is not folklore — it is a physical limitation of the insect.
- They breed in wet organic muck, not in open water like mosquitos. Standing-water advice does not map cleanly onto them.
- Onshore wind off the water pushes them inland; still, humid evenings after rain are the worst nights.
Put a fan on the lanai and point it low, at ankle height. No-see-ums cannot make headway against moving air, and ankles are where most people get bitten.
What reduces them around the house
- Fix the wet spots you control: a chronically soggy low corner of the yard, an irrigation head that overshoots onto mulch, a clogged gutter dumping into a bed.
- Clear thick, permanently damp leaf litter and heavy mulch against the house — that is breeding habitat, not just harbourage.
- Upgrade lanai screen to no-see-um mesh if you use that space in the evening. Nothing else gets close for a screened porch.
- Time outdoor plans around them where you can. The middle of the day is genuinely easier.
What a treatment can and cannot do
Be sceptical of anyone promising to eliminate no-see-ums. Much of the breeding habitat is off your property — marsh, ditch line, the neighbour's low ground — and the adults fly in. What a residential programme realistically does is treat the harbourage and resting vegetation on your property so the population using your yard drops, on a schedule through the season. That is a real improvement in whether you can use your evenings, and it is not the same as elimination.
