Of everything in a Florida yard, the puss caterpillar catches the most people out — because it does not look dangerous. It looks like a small tuft of fur, tan or grey, sometimes almost golden, sitting on a leaf or a wall. Children reach for it precisely because it looks soft. Underneath that fur are venomous spines, and the sting is widely regarded as one of the most painful of any caterpillar in the United States.
What it looks like
- Small — usually around an inch — and completely covered in what appears to be soft hair.
- Colour ranges from pale yellow through tan to a greyish brown, often with a slight tail at one end.
- Found on oak and elm most often, but also on citrus and on ornamental shrubs, and frequently on walls, railings and porch furniture underneath those trees.
- It does not move like a typical caterpillar — it tends to sit still, which is part of why people mistake it for debris or fluff.
If it looks like a tuft of fur or a scrap of a toupee stuck to a leaf, nobody touches it — not with a bare hand, and not to brush it off a child's arm with your fingers.

What the sting is like
The pain is immediate and intense, typically described as burning, and it often radiates well beyond the contact point — a sting on the hand can be felt up the arm. A grid-like pattern of red marks matching the spines commonly appears. Reactions vary between people, and can include swelling, nausea and headache.

You cannot make a Florida yard caterpillar-free, and you would not want to — most caterpillars are harmless and become pollinators. What you can do is manage the ornamentals and trees nearest to where people actually walk and play: keep foliage from overhanging the patio, the play set and the walkway, and check porch railings and outdoor furniture under oaks before anyone sits down, especially in the seasons when they are active.
