Silverfish turn up in the tub, the sink, the bottom of a bathroom cabinet or a stack of stored paper — always somewhere that stays damp. They are wingless, fast, teardrop-shaped and metallic, and they are the classic humidity indicator. In Florida that puts almost every home in range, but it also means something useful: silverfish are one of the few pests where changing the room fixes the problem more reliably than spraying it.
Why they are in your bathroom specifically
- Bathrooms hold humidity longer than any other room, especially without an exhaust fan that vents outside rather than into the attic.
- They feed on starches and cellulose — paper, cardboard, book bindings, wallpaper paste, natural fibres, even the starch in some fabrics. A cabinet of stored paper under a damp sink is ideal.
- They are nocturnal, so you usually find them when you turn on a light at night, or stranded in a tub they climbed into and could not climb out of.
- They can survive a long time between meals, which is why 'there is no food in here' does not rule them out.
Silverfish climb well on rough surfaces and badly on smooth ones. They get into a tub or sink following moisture and then cannot get back out — which is why that is where you see them, not where they live.

The fix, in order of what actually moves the needle
- Run the exhaust fan during and for twenty minutes after every shower, and confirm it vents outside — a fan dumping into the attic just moves the problem upstairs.
- Fix the slow leak. A sink trap, a toilet supply line, a shower pan seam. Silverfish are a symptom of persistent moisture more than anything else.
- Get stored paper and cardboard out of damp rooms, and off the floor of the garage. Plastic bins beat cardboard boxes.
- A dehumidifier in a room that stays stubbornly damp will do more than any spray. They need high humidity to thrive.
Why sprays keep failing here
A contact spray kills the silverfish it lands on. It does not change the humidity in the room, and the population lives inside wall voids, under cabinets and behind baseboards where the spray never reaches. So you get a few days of quiet and then they are back, and it feels like the product failed — when really the room never changed.
When it is worth a professional look
If you have dried the room out properly and you are still finding them regularly, that usually means the moisture source is structural rather than behavioural: a slow leak inside a wall, poor ventilation in a crawl space, or a roof or window leak feeding a void.
